The Free State Women’s Rugby league has come to a 2025 season close with Collegians Valkyries as champions and the Central University Technicon (CUT) Phoenix as the most improved team.
The league’ president, Lebo Lekalakala, expressed her delight to a season which was thrilling but tough. She hopes the next season will be as exciting, but like this season, challenges will always accompany success, she said. One of her concerns is growing the league’s number of teams in order to spread the game in the province. “We are not certain how many teams will be part of the league next year,” she said. “A decision in that regard is still to be made.”
Another challenge to the league is that educational sides sometimes do not have enough players to make a team on the day of the game.“The association’s and the union’s role is to assist all our clubs with their challenges. And, in the case, she pointed out, “there must be support structures that help the clubs to recruit more players at school level.” Lekalakala said this will give their players an opportunity to be trained by community clubs with less payers. “This will be a recipe to make the league a success.”
